Little steps, big changes for your business

Little steps can help you create the big changes in your business that you really want.

How often do you feel overwhelmed by the big actions you need to make to promote your business?

I started thinking about this when I was planning out the next sessions in The Best 90 Days Ever.

I realised that we were feeling less overwhelmed and all of these small steps we were making each week were really starting to add up for everyone in the group.

Break it down

When we think about marketing we often think about ALL of the things we need to do.

I will feel it myself, sometimes there are so many things to do that you don’t know where to start.

But the best thing you can do is break it down into smaller more manageable steps to help you move forward.

Little steps, that help you make big changes in your business.

Sometimes these steps can be simply to make the time to think about where you want to be.

Or put 10 minutes aside to do one small thing to move you forward.

But one thing they have in common is that it’s always the little steps that get the ball rolling.

Eating the Elephant

In a workshop recently we were talking about the saying “there is only one way to eat an elephant: a bite at a time.”

Obviously we aren’t going round eating elephants to help promote our business.

But it just means that even something that seems overwhelming can be done just by tackling it one step at a time.

Think about this in terms of your business and marketing.

What is a huge task that you might feel overwhelmed by?

For me it was always starting a newsletter which is why it took me years to get going with it, but when I did decide to tackle it, I wasn’t a case of just starting it and sending it.

How to break it down

If you want to start an email newsletter you probably wouldn’t sign up for Mailchimp, whack some words in a template and send it out.

Partly because you would have no one on your email list to send it to, and partly because I know you care about your business and your marketing more than that.

Instead you might put aside half an hour to look at the options for which platform you want to use or ask a few people what they use.

You might sit down and think about 3 ideas for emails you could write about and start popping some notes in a Google doc to help you.

You would definitely create a way for people to sign up and direct them to it so you have a few people on your list for when you do send your email out!

Do you see how the big task of starting the newsletter has been broken down into much less overwhelming steps?

These small steps are the things we do to make big moves in our business. They all add up over time and the best part is that because they are so small you hardly notice that you are doing them every day.

How to start today

With any marketing task, take the pressure off completing it all in one go.

Start somewhere with the smallest action that you can’t talk yourself out of and go from there.

In The Best 90 Days Ever, rather than tackle everything in week one, we cover a different marketing topic each week so you’ll make 7 small steps in different areas of your marketing and business.

These small steps all add up to becoming more visible and more excited about promoting your business.

You might not feel like you are making much progress when it’s just 10 minutes a day, but keep track of where you started and where you end up and celebrate those small wins.

By the end of the 3 months that’s 15 hours you’ve spent on your marketing that you might not have been doing before!

Your challenge

Your challenge for this week (if you choose to accept it) is to think of something you really want to achieve with your marketing that maybe you have been putting off or you’ve been too worried to try, or you just don’t know where to start!

Now write down 10 steps you can take towards it that take less than half an hour each.

If you think of something that you think will take longer, break it down even more, we want some teeny tiny steps that you can’t talk yourself out of.

This week I would love for you to work your way through the tasks, and celebrate every time you complete one.

It could be with a cup of tea or some time watching tv or reading your book. Or my treat of choice, a nap.

See how you get on and let me know what challenge you are doing by sending me a message on Instagram!
